Nothing ruins game day like pulling on a new jersey and noticing the logo is a little off, the numbers are already peeling, or the stitching is coming loose after one wash. Counterfeit fan gear is everywhere — in social media ads, on marketplace listings and on websites that look official at first glance.
The good news: a few quick checks catch almost every fake. Here's what to look for before you buy.
1. Start with where you're buying
The simplest way to get the real thing is to buy from the league's official online store. Officially licensed products are what those stores sell, and you get a clear return and exchange policy if a size doesn't fit.
On Fan Gear Finds, every league and team button links to the official store for that league:
If you'd rather go straight to one team, pick yours on our NFL, NBA or NHL team pages.
2. Look for the licensed-product label
Officially licensed gear carries the league's licensed-product branding — usually on a hang tag, a sewn-in label, a sticker or packaging. Check that it's present, printed cleanly and spelled correctly. Missing tags, blurry printing or tags that look photocopied are a red flag.
3. Compare the price with the official store
Official stores often sell several versions of the same jersey — from everyday fan styles up to premium on-field versions — so prices vary legitimately. But if a listing claims to be a premium, on-field jersey at a fraction of what the official store charges for that same version, the price is telling you something.
4. Inspect the details
Knockoffs tend to cut corners in the same places:
- Logos and colors that are slightly the wrong shade, shape or size
- Numbers and lettering that are crooked, oddly spaced, or use the wrong font
- Stitching that's loose, uneven or frayed out of the bag
- Spelling errors on names, cities or tags
- Thin, shiny fabric that doesn't match product photos on the official store
When you can, compare the item side by side with the official store's product photos.
5. Check the seller, not just the listing
A polished product page doesn't mean the seller is legitimate. Before checking out, look for:
- A real return policy and a way to contact the seller
- A web address that matches the store's name — not a near-miss spelling
- Secure checkout and normal payment options (be wary of requests for gift cards, wire transfers or payment apps only)
- Reviews that mention the product itself, not just fast shipping
6. Collectibles need extra proof
Signed items and memorabilia are a category of their own. A genuine autographed piece should come with documentation from a reputable authentication service, and you should be able to verify it with that service. If a seller can't tell you who authenticated an autograph — or the "certificate" is just a printed card — walk away.
7. Buying a gift? Keep it simple
If the gear is a gift, buying from the official store gives you the easiest exchanges when the size or player isn't quite right. Sizing varies by brand and style, so check the size chart on the product page before you order.
The quick checklist
Before you buy, ask:
- Am I buying from the official league store or a seller I can verify?
- Does it have the league's licensed-product labeling?
- Is the price realistic for this version of the item?
- Do the logo, colors, numbers and stitching look right up close?
- For collectibles: who authenticated it, and can I check?
Five yeses and you're good to go. Pick your league and find your team, then gear up the right way.
